THE JERUSALEM SELF DEFENSE ACADEMY

The madrich, Reuven Ekebom, makes the ancient Japanese martial art including all sorts of fighting techniques suitable for youth and children all in a playful, happy, yiras shamayim environment. In chug, the children learn how to evade attacks, different techniques, wrestling, rolling, fighting empty-handed and games to correct posture and improve coordination, balance and more. We integrate play and a happy environment while we learn how to develop our abilities of movement. We learn to conserve our strength in an effective fashion and to develop correct posture. We train in different types of rolling. We get used to perseverance and avoiding fights. The chug is in small groups where every child is given personal attention. The chug is for children ages 3 and up.
NINJA KIDS

"Anyone familiar with the history of the Jewish people know that survival skills can come in handy. Antisemitism, unfortunately, still raises its ugly head today, even after all the persecution we experienced in the past. There are many places in the world where Jews cannot feel safe. Obviously, we as Jews believe it's G-d Who directs everything and also protects us, but at the same it doesn't contradict that we do our part here in this world. G-d expects that from us, I believe.." - Reuven Ekebom, The Madrich
SELF DEFENSE AND THE JEWISH PEOPLE

Ninjutsu is more than a martial art. It's a collection of old Japanese war strategies, espionage, survival skills, and more. Nowadays we practice mainly the martial art and self defense aspect of these skills, but the other strategies are still reflected in our teachings. For instance, we don't learn wrestling skills in order to become a wrestling champion, but rather to improve our physical health and increase our chances of survival in a real emergency, G-d forbid. Good health and high survival ability has always been one of the main aims of ninja warriors, and it is a commandment in the Torah 'V'shmartem et nafshechem," - 'But beware and watch yourself [lit. your soul] very well,' to do everything you can in order to protect and better your health in order to serve HaKadosh Baruch Hu. Come try a free class and unleash the potential of your inner warrior which you can then harness to do the will of Hashem.
ADULT CLASSES
THERAPIES

Private classes are available for dealing with problems of listening and attention, sensitivities, birth defects, rehabilitation after accidents and special needs. Martial arts, judo and ninjutsu in particular, have a very high therapeutic value for children who suffer from physical, mental, behavior and developmental challenges. On top of the Madrich, Reuven Ekebom's private work with children today, he currently works at Alyn's (Jerusalem's children's hospital) department of sport rehabilitation with children who have various challenges, including autism. They greatly benefit from ninjutsu training drills, for instance, rolling, falling, climbing and crawling skills. They learn all the above from the place where their current ability is. A good ninjutsu teacher has great sensitivity and awareness for himself and others, and he can use this for to help boost a child's ability, physical, mental and emotional, beyond expectations.
NINJA THERAPY

The Jerusalem Self Defense Academy, or Jerusalem Dojo, has existed in the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem for over 10 years now. Reuven Ekebom, a 10th degree black belt in a number of old Japanese martial arts, has been teaching people from all walks of life for decades. Most of his students are Orthodox Jewish children and youth.
"Most learning in an observant Jewish community revolves around the holy Torah, the written and the oral tradition. The learning we do at the dojo belongs to the mundane. It's about learning how to protect yourself and your loved ones from harm. Body awareness, fitness, knowledge about life saving maneuvers in the case of an an emergency, healthy diet, etc.
"It is all about skills that help you thrive more both physically and mentally. I want you to use what I teach for good things in life like the Torah, mitzvot and good deeds, not violence G-d forbid. Rarely, and only in a situation of actual "Pikuach nefesh" do you use the actual physical self defense skills.
"When you become more aware of yourself, of who you are, and what your true physical and mental ability is, then you can function better, learn and thrive better than before.
"When you learn these skills you quickly realize that if a person is bigger than you, or stronger, then you will have a hard time to break loose of his grip unless you are willing to discover new things that you and your body may never have thought about before. It's about breaking the habitual movement patterns and reactions through increased body awareness and knowledge of efficient movement in time and space.
"You will learn a lot of new things that will broaden your horizons and improve your physical and mental faculties - and, this, for example, will boost your ability to sit for long times and learn Torah, and/or also to succeed more in an art, craft or other professional skill you may be involved with."
